Luke Martin, son of a former slave and soldier in the United States Colored Troops, was an accomplished brick mason himself.


Hear Luke story about what his life was like during the Jim Crow era. Luke has been a contractor most of his life. A few major New Bern buildings he laid the bricks on were:

  • Dunn Building

  • Rebuilding Tryon Palace (1952-1959)

  • Private Homes

  • Oscar’s Funeral Home
